RESUMO

In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a Global Action Plan on Physical Activity (PA), which included 20 policy actions for creating active societies, environments, people and systems. The objective of this scoping review was to summarize the themes/contents of national PA policies/plans conforming to the WHO's proposals and the country's economy. This review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for scoping reviews. A systematic search of electronic databases (Web of Science, Medline/PubMed, LILACS, PsycINFO, Scopus and SPORTDiscus) and 441 government documents/websites from 215 countries/territories was conducted (February 2021). Documents on national-level policies, published in English, Spanish and Portuguese since 2000, were eligible. The information on content and structure was systematically extracted and summarized into dimensions proposed by the WHO: active societies, environments, people and systems. The search identified 888 article references and 586 potentially relevant documents. After the screening, 84 policy documents from 64 countries were eligible. Most documents (n = 46) provided detailed PA policies/plans amid other health topics (e.g. non-communicable diseases, named 'general documents'), and 38 were PA-specific. The content analysis merged 54 visions, 65 missions, 108 principles, 119 objectives, 53 priorities, 105 targets, 126 indicators and 1780 actions/strategies from 38 PA-specific and 46 general documents. Among the PA-specific documents, the active system's dimension was the most contemplated in the principles (n = 43), priorities (n = 51) and action/strategies (n = 530) elements. At the same time, the objectives (n = 39), targets (n = 52) and indicators (n = 58) presented contents more frequently related to the active people dimension. For the general documents, all principles (n = 4), objectives (n = 14) and priorities (n = 7) were related to the dimension of active people, while target (n = 51), indicator (n = 53) and actions/strategies (n = 292) elements presented content related to all dimensions. The increase in countries with national PA policies/plans should be followed by improving the current ones because important dimensions seem to be not considered in these documents. This will facilitate a global PA agenda that considers the complexity and multidimensionality of PA promotion.

ABSTRACT The promotion of physical activities is one of the 13 actions of the School Health Program. This study aims to describe the actions of body practices and physical activity registered in three accession cycles (2014-2015, 2017-2018, and 2019-2020) by region and Federative Unit (FU). Using descriptive analysis, the number of actions, in each year, cycle, FU, and region were presented. In all regions, the number of municipalities and schools adhering increased in each cycle. When considering the total number of municipalities of each region, 100% of the Northeast region municipalities adhered to the program in the last two cycles. The Southeast region had the lowest proportion of municipalities that adhered to all the cycles. In most FUs, in each cycle, the majority of actions were conducted in the first year. Nationally, there was an increase in the number of actions in all the cycles, mainly in the Northeast and Southeast. From the first to the third cycle, this increase was higher in the Southeast and South. Minas Gerais, Bahia, Ceará, and Maranhão comprised almost half of the actions. The results showed different nuances in the implementation of the promotion of physical activity and can technically subsidize the managers and technicians linked to the program.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the association between simultaneity of four health-risk behaviours, namely, low levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (insufficient MVPA: <420 min/week), tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and excessive television (TV)-(>2 h/d of TV viewing) and self-rated health (SRH) in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: We used data of 100,551 adolescents from the National School Health Survey, a national cross-sectional study carried out in 2015. Association between simultaneity of health risk behaviours (i.e. the ratio between observed and expected prevalence rates) and SRH was examined using logistic regression models. RESULTS: The majority of the participants were female (51.9%) and 14 years of age (50.6%), and 26% of the participants' SRH ranged from 'average' to 'extremely poor'. Those who engaged in the following combinations of health-risk behaviours had higher odds of worse SRH than their healthier counterparts: insufficient MVPA and tobacco use (odds ratio-OR: 2.0, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.4 to 3.0); insufficient MVPA and alcohol consumption (OR: 1.6, 95%CI: 1.3 to 1.9); insufficient MVPA and >2 h/day of TV viewing (OR: 1.3, 95%CI: 1.1 to 1.6); insufficient MVPA, tobacco use and alcohol consumption (OR: 2.1, 95%CI: 1.7, to 2.7); and insufficient MVPA, alcohol consumption and >2 h/day of TV viewing (OR: 1.6, 95%CI: 1.4 to 2.0). CONCLUSIONS: Insufficient MVPA, alcohol consumption, and other health-risk behaviours were associated with worse SRH in Brazilian adolescents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This article presents the recommendations from the Physical Activity Guidelines for the Brazilian Population. METHODS: A steering committee composed of a chair, 6 experts in physical activity, and representatives from the Ministry of Health/Brazil, Pan American Health Organization, Brazilian Society of Physical Activity and Health designed the guidelines, which was implemented by 8 working groups, as follows: (1) understanding physical activity, (2) children up to 5 years old, (3) children and youth from 6 to 17 years old, (4) adults, (5) older adults (60 years and above), (6) physical education at school, (7) pregnant and postpartum women, and (8) people with disabilities. The methodological steps included evidence syntheses, hearings with key stakeholders, and public consultation. RESULTS: Across 8 chapters, the guidelines provide definitions of physical activity and sedentary behavior, informing target groups on types of physical activity, dosage (frequency, intensity, and duration), benefits, and supporting network for physical activity adoption. The guidelines are openly available in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Braille and in audio versions, with a supplementary guide for health professionals and decision makers, and a report about the preparation and references. CONCLUSIONS: The Physical Activity Guidelines for the Brazilian Population provide evidence-based recommendations, being a public-directed resource to contribute to the physical activity promotion in Brazil.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Associations between behaviors and individual chronic diseases have been demonstrated. However, the relationship between time spent on sedentary behavior and multimorbidity remains less clear. OBJECTIVE: To identify the predictive power of various intensities of physical activity versus sedentary behavior, as discriminatory factors for cardiometabolic multimorbidity (cardiovascular diseases and diabetes) in the elderly. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in different residential census tracts and residential households in Florianópolis (SC). METHODS: The participants were 425 elderly people (65% women) from the EpiFloripa Aging study in 2014. Sociodemographic variables and self-reported incidence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes were obtained via a questionnaire. Light physical activity (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) were measured using accelerometers. The analyses were stratified according to sex and included a diagnosis for interpretation. Behaviors were taken into consideration if their predictive power in terms of area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was greater than 0.50. The time cutoff point was defined from sensitivity and specificity. RESULTS: For older adult men with diabetes, the predictive value of MVPA for absence of multi-morbidity was an area of 0.75 (95% confidence interval, CI: 0.538-0.962), and a cutoff of 17 minutes per day. Older adult women with diabetes had an area of 0.71 (95% CI: 0.524-0.866) and a cutoff of 10 minutes per day. LPA and SB did not present predictive values. CONCLUSION: The time spent on MVPA is a predictor of absence of multimorbidity in elderly people with diabetes, for both sexes.

We evaluated the validity and clarity of the concepts and terminologies adopted to develop the Physical Activity Guidelines for the Brazilian Population (Guidelines). The Physical Activity Domains Working Group (Domains WG) assessed the validity and clarity of the following concepts: physical activity, seden-tary behavior, PA domains (free time, commuting, work or study, and domestic tasks) and intensities (light, moderate and vigorous). The concepts were evaluated in three stages: 1- Concept proposition; 2- Expert consultation (two steps); 3- Public consultation. The concepts proposed by the Domains WG were based on international guidelines, scientific articles, official documents from the Ministry of Health, and techni-cal-scientific-academic knowledge of the Domains WG members, discussed in a series of meetings (stage 1). In the second stage (expert consultation), validity and clarity of the concepts were tested on two occasions. Seventy and forty researchers working in the other Guidelines WGs contributed to first and second steps, respectively. In both occasions, validity and clarity agreement were equal to or greater than 80% for all concepts. Suggestions provided in step 2 were adopted, and new versions of the concepts were made available for the third step, a public consultation carried out by the Ministry of Health. Fourteen suggestions related to the concepts were made and, when relevant, included in the Guidelines. According to the assessment and suggestions by experts and members of the public, the concepts and terminologies proposed by the Domains WG for the Guidelines are valid and clear

In 2020, the Brazilian Health Ministry in partnership with the Federal University of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul selected researchers for the elaboration of the Brazilian Physical Activity Guide. The objective of this article was to present the methods used as well as the results of the Brazilian Physical Activity Guide for adults from 18 to 59 years of age. The construction of the guide was based on four guiding questions: What, when, why and how to practice physical activity? To answer these questions, two main strategies were adopted: review of scientific evidence and "listening" to different strategic groups. From the procedures performed, it is recommended that adults accumulate between 150 and 300 minutes of physical activity per week of moderate intensity and / or between 75 and 150 minutes per week of vigorous intensity, regardless of the type (aerobics or muscle strengthening). Among the identified benefits, the reduction of mortality due to chronic diseases, improvement in mental health, in social and emotional aspects stands out, (e.g., interaction with other people, contact with local culture etc.) and emotional (e.g., self-esteem, feeling of well-being etc.). In addition, the recommendations were not restricted to the aforementioned outcomes, we sought to consider the specificities and singularities of the adult population in different regions of Brazil. The guide also pre-sents messages to overcome the main barriers of physical activity, and the existing support networks to help Brazilian adults to have a more physically active life

Aiming to guide the population of the physical activity benefits to health, national researchers, in partnership with the Health Ministry, have elaborated the Physical Activity Guide for the Brazilian population. The aim of this study is to present the process of elaborating Brazilian physical activity recommendations for people with disabilities (PWD). The process of elaborating specific recommendations for PWD has included the participation of nine researchers/professionals who held weekly meetings, systematic reviews, and focus groups with PWD, caregivers, healthcare managers, professionals, and researchers. In the systematic review, a total of 83 studies were included and reviewed. The focus groups were performed using an electronic form sent by e-mail to health professionals, managers, and researchers who worked with PWD and virtual focus groups, which were conducted in two moments: (a) with PWD, caregivers, and professionals; (b) with pro-fessors and researchers on the theme. Based on the results of systematic reviews and focus groups, the physical activity recommendations for PWD were developed considering the minimum physical activity time accord-ing to age group, types of physical activity, and recommendations for reducing sedentary behavior. Therefore, the present work presented recommendations for physical activity for PWD, which can be combined with public policies, environments, and opportunities for physical activity, becoming an essential strategy for the engagement of PWD in physical activities

The aim was to analyze the planning of body practices and physical activities (BP/PA) of physical education professionals concluding the Improvement Course in Implementation of the National Health Promotion Policy: Academia da Saúde Program (PAS). Of the analyzed actions (n = 149), 60.5% (n = 286) were of BP/PA. Gymnastics was more frequent (20.1%; n = 95) and 21.4% (n = 101) of the practices had associated food. More than 60% of the actions did not inform instruments (n = 330), schedule (n = 345), financial resources (n = 366) and reach of users (n = 394). Multiprofessional action was expected in 61.7% (n = 292) of the actions. Thus, health planning lacks methodological information, assessment, and target audience for implementing actions

RESUMO

This study aims to analyse the association between perceived presence of public spaces near residences and practice of physical activity during leisure time by adults in the state capitals of Brazil, based on sociodemographic characteristics. Participants were individuals aged ≥18 years living in the 27 state capitals of Brazil (n = 52 929, 53.9% female) who responded to a national survey called VIGITEL in 2013. Physical activity during leisure time (≥1 time/week), perception of space, population and sociodemographic variables (sex, age, years of study and geographic region) were self-reported. The adjusted binary logistic regression analysis was used. Among adults, the prevalence of physical activity during leisure was 45.1% (95% CI [44.2; 46.0]), and 71.1% (95% CI [70.2, 71.8]) perceived public space near their residence. A direct association between perceiving public space and physical activity ([OR] = 1.43; 95% CI [1.32; 1.55]) was observed. No significant difference was observed in the population groups (men and women, younger and older adults, and those with more and fewer years of study). Thus, even with the possible regional differences in Brazilian state capitals, the presence of public spaces increases the practice of physical activity during leisure time, independent of sociodemographic variables.

RESUMO

Abstract The aim of the study was to analyze the graduate's profile of the PhD course in Postgraduate Program in Physical Education (PPPE), Federal University of Santa Catarina. Information from the 92 PhD graduates from 2006 to 2018 was collected from secondary sources of public domain sites. Three independent evaluators filtered the information through double typing. The data revealed that more than 50% of the graduates were male, 58.7% had a scholarship, and 27.8% had a sandwich doctorate in foreign institutions. Only 17.4% of graduates completed postdoctoral training. The highest proportion has employment as effective teachers (73.3%), mainly in public higher education institutions. The concentration themes in the area of Physical Activity and Health (PAH) predominate in the titles of the conclusion work. During the formative trajectory, 48.9% of the graduates changed, at least, once in the concentration area, 44.6% remained in the same area and 6.5% investigated the three distinct concentration areas during undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies. The majority develop PAH (50.0%), followed by Pedagogical (25.5%) and Biodynamics and Human Performance (17.8%). Thus, the doctors training in PPPE seems to design a profile according to the idealized by the course, with professional possibilities of insertion in higher education and engagement in scientific investigations.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between sociodemographic characteristics of census tracts and the presence/quality of public open spaces and physical activity facilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 643 census tracts in Florianópolis, Brazil, the presence and quality of public open spaces and physical activity facilities were objectively analyzed and the data by census tracts using Geographic Information Systems was treated. Outcomes were analyzed considering the census tracts as having: ≥ 1 public open spaces; ≥ 1 public open spaces with high quality; ≥ 2 physical activity facilities and high-quality physical activity facilities. Sociodemographic characteristics were the independent variables. Logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: Census tracts with a medium-income (OR = 1.8; 95%CI 1.1-3.0) and high-income (OR = 2.4; 95%CI 1.4-4.0), in those with medium (OR = 1.7; 95%CI 1.0-2.7) and high residential density (OR = 2.0; 95%CI 1,2-3.3), and with higher proportions of older adults (OR = 3.3; 95%CI 1.9-5.7) had a higher proportion of public open spaces. Census tracts with higher proportions of children/adolescents (OR = 0.3; 95%CI 0.2-0.6) and non-white residents (OR= 0.6; 95%CI 0.3-0.9) were less likely to contain public open spaces. The tracts with medium (OR = 4.0; 95%CI 1.4-11.3) and high-income (OR = 3.6; 95%CI 1.2-10.2) were more likely to contain public open spaces with ≥ 2 structures for physical activity, compared with those with low-income. We observed the inverse in sectors with a high proportion of non-white residents (OR = 0.3; 95%CI 0.1-0.9). CONCLUSIONS: Census tracts with higher proportions of children or adolescents, non-white individuals and those in the low-income strata had lower odds of containing public open spaces and physical activity facilities.

RESUMO

Promoting healthy lifestyle factors (e.g., physical activity, healthy eating, less screen time) among young people is a relevant and challenging step toward reducing non-communicable diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a multicomponent intervention on lifestyle factors among adolescents from schools in low Human Development Index (HDI < 0.500) areas. The Fortaleça sua Saúde program was conducted with 548 adolescents aged 11⁻18 years old in the intervention group and 537 in the control group. The four-month intervention included strategies focused on training teachers, new opportunities for physical activity in the school environment, and health education strategies for the school community (including parents). Moderate- to-vigorous physical activity level (≥420 min/week), TV watching and computer use/gaming (<2 h/day), daily consumption of fruit juice, fruit, vegetables, soft drinks, savory foods and sweets, and current alcohol and tobacco use were measured before and after intervention. McNemar's test and logistic regression (odds ratio [OR] and a 95% confidence interval [95% CI]) were used, considering p < 0.05. In the intervention schools, a significant increase occurred in the number of adolescents who met physical activity guidelines (5.3%; 95% CI = 0.8; 9.8) and who reported using computer for <2 h a day (8.6%; 95% CI = 3.8; 13.4) after intervention. No changes were observed in the control schools. At the end of the intervention, adolescents from intervention schools were more likely to practice physical activity at recommended levels (OR = 1.44; 95% CI = 1.00; 2.08) than adolescents from control schools. No significant change was observed for the other lifestyle factors. In conclusion, this multicomponent intervention was effective in promoting physical activity among adolescents from vulnerable areas. However, other lifestyle factors showed no significant change after intervention. This study is registered at Clinicaltrials.gov NCT02439827.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To examine the level of physical activity and sedentary behavior (SB), measured with accelerometers, in older adults from a city in southern Brazil according to sociodemographic and health characteristics. METHODS: The sample consisted of 425 older adults (≥63 y) from the EpiFloripa Aging Study. Light physical activity (LPA), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and SB were measured with accelerometers over a period of 7 days. RESULTS: The older adults spent two-thirds of the time of use in SB, one-third in LPA, and only 2.1% (95% confidence interval, 1.8-2.2) in MVPA. In the final adjusted model, lower levels of MVPA were observed for women, as well as higher SB and lower LPA and MVPA for those with higher age. There were also trends toward prolonged SB and lower LPA when participants had a higher educational level and toward lower MVPA with higher body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Constant monitoring of physical activity levels and SB using objective measures is recommended and interventions should be directed at the groups most exposed to excessive SB and low levels of MVPA.

RESUMO

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the quantity and quality of open public spaces (OPS) and physical activity (PA) facilities in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina. A descriptive survey was carried out in 2015 on the quantity, type and quality of OPS and PA facilities. The quality of OPS and PA facilities were assessed by systematic observation. A quality index of OPS (score -3 to 6 points) was divided into three categories, poor (category ≤0), average (0.1 to 2.9) and good quality (category ≥3). For analysis, descriptive statistics were used. Of the 214 OPS, the highest proportion was squares/gardens (n = 128, 59.8%). Of the 214 OPS, 59.8% were squares/gardens. About 51.9% (n = 111) of OPS had good quality. A higher proportion of comfort items obtained good quality, such as lighting (54.7%), trash cans (45.8%) and garden benches (55.1%). In more than 60.0% of OPS, there were no incivilities. Of the 377 PA facilities identified, 53.6% presented good quality and 13.8% poor quality. Playgrounds (29.4%), outdoor gyms (15.9%) and soccer fields/courts (14.9%) were more frequent, only the latter less than half had good quality (28,6%). There were no PA facilities in 29.0% of OPS. A higher proportion of OPSs have good quality, but less than half require improvement, comfort, less incivility and greater diversity of PA facilities. This may promote greater visits to OPS and leisure opportunities, including the practice of PA.

The goal was to translate and adapt the coding items related to the dimensions of the RE-AIM model to assist in the planning and evaluation of physical activity and health promotion programs as well as in the analysis of the quality of the report in systematic review studies. Mono and bilingual health professionals carried out conceptual, item and semantic equivalence. In the conceptual and item analysis specialists carried out a discussion and in the semantic one, an inverse (English to Portuguese) and a reverse (Portuguese to English) translation of the items were performed. Posteriorly, the equivalence between the retranslations and the original content was evaluated. Therefore, the translation and adaptation of the 54 items that allow the planning and evaluation of the programs were presented as well as the translation and adaptation of the 21 items necessary to the analysis of the quality of the information reported in scientific evidence. It is expected to contribute to programs planning and evaluation or their systematic review aiming at physical activity and health promotion
